Jan is passionate about creating a world that consumes less energy, is more sustainable, and socially just. For 13 years he has worked towards this vision as a consultant, policy adviser, researcher and volunteer. Jan is the Director of EnPolicy Consulting Ltd providing services to policy makers, international donor agencies, think tanks, trade bodies and the energy industry. He also works with the Regulatory Assistance Project (RAP). RAP is a global, non-profit team of experts focused on the long-term economic and environmental sustainability of the power and natural gas sectors. Through RAP, Jan is one of the European Commission’s key advisers on the Energy Efficiency Directive having authored five technical reports on the Directive.
In addition to his policy advisory and consultancy work Jan also has a track record in energy research focusing on the politics of energy efficiency. He is a Senior Fellow at the Centre on Innovation and Energy Demand (CIED) based at Sussex Energy Group (SEG) of SPRU, University of Sussex. He is also an Honorary Research Associate at the Lower Carbon Futures Group of Oxford University's world-renowned Environmental Change Institute. Jan's work has resulted in more than 60 publications in peer-reviewed journals, conference proceedings and trade magazines.
Jan regularly presents on invitation at national and international conferences and has been invited to give evidence as an expert witness on several occasions to the House of Commons and the European Parliament. He has been interviewed by the New York Times, the Sunday Times, BBC Radio 4 and The Guardian. Jan's research is widely cited including by the International Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), the International Energy Agency (IEA) and in various parliamentary reports. In recognition of his work Jan has been appointed to be the Dean of the Energy Evaluation Academy of the International Energy Policy and Programme Evaluation Conference (IEPPEC). He is also a member of the tt30, a think tank of the Club of Rome and an alumnus of the Atlantic Council's Emerging Leaders in Environmental and Energy Policy Network.
